CSE Offers a set of virtual instructional lab machines that students and instructors can connect to using Remote Desktop. These machines closely resemble the configuration of the physical lab machines in the basement and are intended to provide resources to those who may find it more convenient than to come to the physical labs on campus.

You must copy and past the entire name of the vdilab machine into the remote desktop connection client on your computer. For clues on how to start the remote desktop connection see below:

Windows and Macintosh users: Before being able to access windows machines with Remote Desktop, you must install the Husky OnNet Package. Husky OnNet is a downloadable application (intended for use on home computers and personal mobile devices) that allows users to remotely access resources that normally require on-campus connections. Detailed Husky OnNet (a.k.a. VPN) service information and instructions can be found on the UW IT Connect pages, or you may choose to proceed directly to the OnNet download page (requires UW NetID). Once downloaded and installed the Husky OnNet service must be started, look for an application called "Big IP Edge Client" (which also requires UW NetID). After authenticating, it will direct traffic to on-campus machines through Husky OnNet (traffic to other destinations will be unaffected). NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL HUSKY ON NET ON ANY DEPT. MACHINES

  • Windows:

    Right click the desktop, select "NEW" --> "SHORTCUT". Type "MSTSC" in the box that appears and then click "NEXT" and "FINISH". This creates a shortcut for remote desktop connection on your desktop. Now just double click that to start the application. Cut and past the name of a machine above into the "COMPUTER" field. Log in using your CSENETID\username (ex: CSENETID\bob)

  • Mac OSX

    If you haven't already, go to the apple store and download and install the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" App. After installation, start the program. Cut and past the name of a machine above into the "COMPUTER" field. Log in using your CSENETID\username (ex: CSENETID\bob)

  • Linux

    There is currently no VPN (Husky OnNet) client for linux. A work order ticket has been opened. You can tunnel port 3389 fairly easily to attu in order to establish a connection. The current product we are recommending is xFreeRDP. You will have to check that site for help with your specific distribution (an example for 'yum' based distros = "yum install freerdp"). Once freerdp is installed, you can cut and paste a machine name from above, and use it in a command like:
    xfreerdp /d:CSENETID /size:1280x1024 /u:bob /v:vdilab12.cs.washington.edu /sec:nla
    The different releases of xfreerdp have different syntax, please see the help file for you version. Sometimes the username must be provided in the format "/u:bob@csenetid.cs.washington.edu" with no "/d:CSENETID" option.


  • You must enter CSENETID as the domain name in front of your username. Example: CSENETID\myusername
  • The Client you use must support NLA (Network Level Authentication), NLA is required by all CSE windows machines
